(a) a Bachelor's degree obtained with at least Second Class Honours in an area of study deemed suitable by the Board or

(b) a degree from this or another university which the Board considers as comparable to the degree indicated in paragraph (a).

Applicants may be required to provide evidence of being in possession of the licence to practice in the register of the profession concerned, as kept by the relevant regulatory council.

Applicants may be required to provide evidence of work experience following registration with the relevant regulatory council in the proposed area of study or area of specialisation, if applicable. The minimum number of years of experience required shall be indicated at the time of the call for applications.

The maximum number of students that can be admitted into the course is 15 students.

During the first year of the Course, accepted students may be required to undergo an occupational health assessment so as to ascertain that they are fit for the duties related to their proposed studies. Students who do not fulfil this requirement may be barred from progressing with their studies. Failure to disclose information about a physical or mental health problem that could affect patient safety is considered to be a serious breach of the University Suitability to Practise Regulations.

The full-time M.Sc. in Midwifery programme (EQF level 7) consists of a total of 90 ECTS credits, distributed over three semesters (1 year), and is a continuation to the Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Midwifery programme (240ECTS).

The first semester will consist of three compulsory study-units totalling to 30ECTS, while the second semester will also consist of three compulsory study-units, with a total credit value of 25ECTS.The remaining 5ECTS will be gained by choosing an elective study-unit of your choice that will be on offer (study-unit descriptions can be accessed through the Programme of Studies).

In the final semester, you carry out a research-based dissertation of 30ECTS.

This programme of study is governed by the General Regulations for University Postgraduate Awards, 2021 and by the Bye-Laws for the award of Master of Science - M.Sc. - under the auspices of the Faculty of Health Sciences.

By the end of the programme, you will be able to:

  • Critically analyse the body of knowledge underpinning midwifery education and health care.
  • Evaluate the contemporary development in midwifery practice, education and research as a means of enhancing the health and wellbeing of women, infants and families.
  • Design and complete a research study using rigorous scientific methods.
  • Utilise evidence-based knowledge in midwifery practice and education.
  • Act as a leader and change agent in the various areas of midwifery practice and education to ameliorate the holistic care of women, infants and families.
  • Collaborate and network with foreign universities/hospitals for personal and professional development.

The programme aims at enhancing your professional career as an autonomous practitioner, leader and change agent, midwifery manager, policy maker, clinical educator/academic and/or researcher.
